Winter Amidships still has SPACE!

The Winter Amidships competition, also known as WAM, is just a few weeks away, and scouts from across the area are gearing up for this exciting event. WAM is open to Scouts BSA Troops, Venture Crews, Sea Scout Ships, Explorer Posts, Girl Scout/Mariner Troops, and American Heritage Girls Units or 4H, 14 years of age, and completed the 8th grade, and will take place on Saturday, February 25th. Registration is still open, capped at the first 100 participants. New Units who have never attended before should reach out about getting the late fee waived.

WAM is a unique event that tests the skills and knowledge of young scouts in a variety of ways. This year’s competition will include a Knots Relay, Compass Board Relay, Life Jacket Relay, Heaving Line, First Aid, Tug-of-War, International Code Flags, an Obstacle Course, Happy Feet Relay, and a “Surprise” events that are sure to challenge participants in new and exciting ways. The focus on teamwork and cooperation is one of the key features of WAM, making it a fun and educational experience for scouts of all ages and skill levels.

One of the great things about WAM is that participants don’t need to have any prior knowledge or experience to take part in the competition. Units are encouraged to try every event, regardless of their level of expertise. However, for those who are looking to be competitive, it is recommended that they review the 36 international code flags, a 32-point compass board, and the following knots: Square knots, bowline, sheet bend, figure eight, clove hitch, two half hitches, taut-line, marling hitch, timber hitch, cleat hitch, overhand knot, and the Stevedore’s knot.

WAM organizers have put together a well-planned and organized event to ensure a safe and exciting experience for all participants. The competition will take place over the course of a single day. After a long day of competing, scouts can sit down and enjoy dinner together and reflect on the day’s events. Awards will be given out to recognize the top performers, and there will be a dance for participants to enjoy and socialize with one another.

Winter Amidships competition is a fantastic opportunity for scouts to showcase their skills and determination. With its challenging activities, team-focused events, and unique surprises, WAM promises to be an exciting and memorable experience for all participants. Whether you’re a seasoned scout or a newcomer to the world of scouting, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Smaller units may combine and compete as one unit. Combined units must be pre-approved by WAM. Please reach out if you’d like to attend but would like to combine with another unit.
